Building Control Approval
Romsey Structural Engineering Ltd can assist you in obtaining Building Control approval from your Local Authority for your extension or structural alteration.
By law, structural work must comply with the Building Regulations and be inspected by a Building Inspector, who will issue a Completion Certificate. This certificate should be kept with your property deeds, as it will typically be required when the property is sold.
How We Help
Your design package from Romsey Structural Engineering Ltd is prepared to meet Part A (Structural Safety) of the Building Regulations. There are two main routes to approval:
1. Full Plans Application
Your Local Authority’s Building Control will examine both the architectural and structural drawings before construction begins. This process normally takes around six weeks. For most significant projects, this is the recommended route, as it provides certainty and avoids surprises once work is underway.
2. Building Notice
For smaller works such as single-storey side extensions under permitted development, a Building Notice may be sufficient. In these cases your design package is reviewed on site by the Building Inspector, and only a few days’ notice is typically required.
Which Route Should You Choose?
For loft conversions and larger extensions, Full Plans Application is usually the best choice. The design, materials and layout are agreed in advance, enabling builders to quote precisely and reducing the risk of unexpected costs or disruptions during the build.
